The digital world offers countless advantages, and it also exposes people and companies to sophisticated threats. Knowing the different kinds of digital fraud is the first step to protecting yourself against them.
Phishing: the art of digital deception
Phishing is one of the techniques cybercriminals use most. It consists of sending emails that pose as legitimate organisations: banks, public services, well known platforms. The objective is clear, to deceive you into handing over your personal and financial data.
How it works. The attacker builds an almost perfect replica of the original website. When you click the link in the email you land on that false site and, without knowing it, hand your credentials straight to the fraudster.
What it looks like in practice. Criminals frequently send mass emails posing as a well known bank. The message warns about supposed suspicious activity and asks for immediate verification through a link. The link leads to a page identical to the bank portal, built to capture usernames, passwords and card numbers.
Malware: malicious software
Malware is short for malicious software. It covers any program, file or code written to damage systems or devices.
What it is capable of

- Capturing passwords and access credentials
- Watching your activity online
Malware arrives through apparently harmless downloads, email attachments, or compromised websites.
Ransomware: digital hostage taking
Ransomware is a specialised form of malware that has caused losses in the millions to companies and governments worldwide. Its mechanics are particularly perverse: it encrypts your files and demands a ransom, usually in cryptocurrency, to give the access back.
How ransomware behaves
- It encrypts documents, photographs, databases and critical files
- It presents a ransom note with payment instructions
- It sets deadlines, raising the psychological pressure
- It uses payment methods that are hard to trace
Many organisations end up paying because they have no adequate backups. Even after paying, there is no guarantee of recovering the information.
Deepfakes: advanced audiovisual manipulation
Deepfakes are among the most sophisticated and worrying threats today. Using artificial intelligence and deep learning, criminals can produce false video or audio of real people that is extremely convincing.
How deepfakes are used for fraud
- Impersonation on corporate video calls
- False messages from executives requesting urgent transfers
- Manipulation of public opinion through fabricated statements by known figures
- Extortion and blackmail with fabricated content
The technology advances so quickly that telling a well made deepfake from an authentic recording gets harder every year.
